The Norwegian research vessel "M/V Ocean Explorer" collects geological data around the globe. These data are used to detect possible crude oil reserves. For seismic measurement, the vessel tows six streamers each 6 000 long and 6-8 cm in diameter. |

The necessary power is provided by two 20 cylinder vee-line diesel engines. The line shaft transmits power of 2 647 kW from the engine to the gearbox. The line shaft is composed of five linked shaft segments. Each shaft segment is supported in two bearing units. |

The "M/V Ocean Explorer" returns regularly to its home port. These lay times should be as short as possible. The lay time is extended by maintenance work. If the maintenance work can be speeded up, this will shorten the lay time and give cost savings. A major item of maintenance is the replacement of the ship"s line shaft bearings. In order to replace the bearings, the shaft segment must be dismantled and removed. During reassembly, the shaft segments must then be realigned. This maintenance work takes 36 hours. The objective was to significantly reduce this maintenance time. |
